G8 Climate Progress, Pickens plan to replace oil & more

I was glad to see President Bush join other G8 leaders in committing their nations to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2050. This is a step in the right direction, though atmospheric concentration goals of 500 parts per million (ppm) or lower will necessitate further reductions in the decades ahead. Leadership will be required by Obama or McCain to get emissions falling over the next few years domestically and to help pull together a post-Kyoto deal internationally that is attractive enough to garner significant participation by China and India.

T. Boone Pickens is promoting a ten-year plan that would help lower US emissions. (more…)

Daily Recap: More record prices for oil and coal, Toyota talks solar

After a great vacation enjoying the 30+ gas mileage on my old 1990 Toyota Camry, the daily recaps recommence. Energy markets last week have been full of drama to report on.

In oil, a weak dollar and further reduction in US crude stockpiles drove a new record over $145 per barrel. But the price of gasoline and diesel have remained mostly flat lately due to (more…)
